One of Victor Schœlcher’s first major journeys was his visit to America as a porcelain merchant. In 1829, he visited Mexico and published five letters recounting his travels in the *Revue de Paris* in France. He was not yet the famous abolitionist he would become at the end of his journey, after witnessing the realities of slavery. Through his European eyes, we will discover various cities, including Mexico City, and different aspects of Mexican customs and traditions: leisure, food, culture, popular and religious festivals…
