Easter in Alsace
between traditions, delicacies and festivities

In Alsace, Easter is more than just a celebration: it's a time full of traditions, symbols and delicious flavours. From popular legends to spring decorations and culinary specialities, the region celebrates this time of year with authenticity. At the heart of the festivities, the famous Easter bunny, colourful eggs and sweet treats bring together young and old to share moments of conviviality.

Symbols and legends

The Easter Bunny

Unlike the rest of France, where the church bells bring the eggs, in Alsace it's the Easter hare, the Osterhase, that takes on this task. This custom, which stems from Germanic traditions, makes the hare a symbol of fertility and renewal. From Easter morning, children set off in search of the chocolate eggs hidden in the gardens.

Eggs are an integral part of Alsatian Easter traditions. They are often decorated with colourful patterns, sometimes using traditional techniques such as plant-based dyes. They can also be found hanging from tree branches or at Easter markets, where craftsmen offer handmade creations.

The Lamala

It is impossible to talk about Easter in Alsace without mentioning the Lamala or Lammele (lamb in Alsatian), this delicious lamb-shaped sponge cake.

A true emblem of Easter celebrations, this soft cake is baked in a terracotta mold according to traditional methods. Sprinkled with sugar and decorated with a colored ribbon, it is enjoyed during family dinners.
